Steamboat Inn Employment Information
The Location
Steamboat Inn is located in Southern Oregon on Hwy 138, also known as the highway of waterfalls, 38 miles east of Roseburg. We are on the North Umpqua Trail, right on the river, and within driving distance of waterfalls, swimming holes, lakes, a hot springs, and Crater Lake National Park. Roseburg has shops, entertainment options, wineries, and more. Our property consists of three separate sections - The main inn, library, cabins and suites right off the highway, the Hideaway Cottages tucked in the woods up Steamboat Creek Road, and the Campwater and staff houses across Mott Bridge along the other bank of the river. Staff housing is one mile from the main inn.

FAQ
I don’t have a vehicle. Why is that required?
Staff housing is one mile from the main inn. While that is a walkable distance, it is a busy highway with no shoulder. It is unsafe to walk, especially in the dark. You will also want transportation to enjoy the area or town on your days off and to do shopping/errands. We have tried having employees without vehicles in the past and it has failed every time. The only exception are couples or friend teams that share a car between two people.
I have a well behaved pet. Can I bring it?
Unfortunately, no. As the houses are shared, pets can be a problem with other staff. Also, every time we have made an exception to this rule there has been damage so all pets are a hard no.
When is payday?
Payday is on the 5th and 20th of every month. The pay period of the 1st to the 15th is paid on the 20th and the pay period of the 16th through the end of the month is paid on the 5th. Pay rates vary by position. House tips are included on paychecks. House tips are when guests tip on their entire stay at check out. That money is pooled and divided among all employees based on hours worked each pay period. It is usually $1.50-$3 per hour bonus. All employees must claim their cash tips, it’s the law. Oregon is not a tip credit state so even tipped employees must make at least minimum wage regardless of the tips they receive.
What is staff housing like?
Staff houses are three bedroom houses with a living room, kitchen and one bathroom. They are furnished, have the kitchen basics, and a washer/dryer. Rooms are private and have a twin bed. There is a couple room available with a king or that room can be shared by friends with the bed split into two twins. Staff houses are coed. There is no charge to live in staff housing. Staff is expected to be respectful of roommates and the property. There is absolutely no smoking or vaping inside any building on the property.
Is there cell and internet service?
There is no cell service for 20 miles in either direction. We just can’t get a signal. Our only option for internet is satellite and it is garbage. We do have it at the main inn. We tried to have internet installed at the staff houses last year but it didn’t work. We will try again this season but can’t promise anything. Plan on having no to limited internet here. Even Starlink doesn’t work. Again, if that changes we will put internet in the staff houses. Each staff house does have a TV in the living room with a DVD player and DVDs but no cable/dish service. Being located deep in a river canyon surrounded by trees and mountains has advantages and disadvantages.
Who do I report to?
The owners Melinda and Travis Woodward live onsite and are hands on owner operators. Melinda handles restaurant operations while Travis handles housekeeping/grounds/maintenance. One or both of them are available daily for any issue or question.
